How iPads Can Refresh Traditional Classrooms

Following the trend of mass mobile device adoption, educators increasingly contemplate possibilities of using iPads in classroom. State-of-the-art mobile technology is getting more and more popular in different settings and schools are no exception. Adoption of mobile devices is transforming traditional classrooms into a place that delivers real-world knowledge using efficient tech resources.

Why So Popular?
In the era of digital data and online communications, iPads are able to reach spaces traditional teaching methods cannot. These spaces mostly refer to the Internet and a variety of applications and pieces of information available online. Constant access to important educational resources is probably the major benefit of using iPads in classroom but it’s up to an educator to find the right ways to use it.

An additional reason to consider using iPad as an educational tool is the fact that learners have been actively using it in private purposes for years. So, what’s the point of limiting their use in classroom if teenagers already have a constant access to them outside of it?

Even though not every school or classroom is an appropriate setting for iPad implementation, educators should definitely consider the possibilities and embrace mobile technology just like their students did in their everyday lives.

The Gaps
Collaboration

I believe most of us remember the times when collaborative school projects meant gatherings at someone’s home after school. These projects would usually be done properly and we’d have a great time working on them. However, such a project would always make us spend too much time on the very organization, which is why there usually wasn’t enough time for more than a single project per semester.

With the development of web tools such as Dropbox and Skype, it has become a lot easier to organize teams of people to work on a single project. Since communication is smooth and team members can view or edit files remotely at the same time, a project could be finished much faster. In this regard, iPad can be a crucial tool for enabling the shift towards collaborative learning.

Research

The Internet has changed so many aspects of our everyday lives by providing us with constant access to useful resources. This revolution significantly transformed higher education and created more opportunities for academic development and research. Though it becomes increasingly difficult to find reliable information in the sea of different websites, the Internet remains the most efficient research tool one can make use of. The access to educational websites, free online libraries, dictionaries and encyclopedias changed the way we approach learning today. By allowing their students to use iPads in the classroom, teachers practically train them to develop their research skills.

Foreign Language Learning

There are different ways in which iPads can contribute to efficiency of foreign language classes. Language courses need to be interactive in order to enable students to gain real-world knowledge and sufficient speaking and listening skills. With an iPad as an interactive platform it is easier than ever to practice language skills. Plethora of free or low-priced apps can help students work on critical language skills on their own. Simple applications for learning grammar, vocabulary or pronunciation, as well as interesting online exercises enable even young learners to start working on their language skills.

Besides this, students can join language learning networks and communicate with native speakers, which is frequently impossible in traditional classrooms due to the general deficit of foreign instructors in certain regions.

Now and Then
Conservative educators may still restrain from introducing tech innovation, believing that their centuries-long teaching methods can work for new generations the same way they have been working for the old ones. This may be true to a certain extent but is not the reason to ignore the benefits of mobile learning. After all, education has always been in line with the requirements of the society, its purpose being to equip students with real-world skills.

Similarly, iPads can refresh traditional classrooms by introducing the look and feel of the real world that everybody faces after school. This world is increasingly mobile and digital and there’s plenty of reasons to include it in class curriculum.

Plickers 2.0 is Coming Soon!

Plickers is one of the most popular new tools that I showed off in my workshops this summer. Plickers uses a teacher's iPad or Android tablet in conjunction with a series of QR codes to create a student response system. Students are given a set of QR codes on large index cards. The codes are assigned to students. Each code card can be turned in four orientations. Each orientation provides a different answer. When the teacher is ready to collect data, he or she uses the Plickers mobile app to scan the cards to see a bar graph of responses.

Plickers version 2.0 is going to be available later this weekend (Plickers will be offline on Saturday afternoon the team pushes the updates). One of the key features of Plickers 2.0 is that it will work even if your mobile device is offline. The data you collect while offline will be stored in the app and synced to your online Plickers account when you reconnect to the Internet. Plickers 2.0 will allow you to use questions across multiple classes by reusing questions from your question library. A new "live view" will be available in Plickers 2.0. The live view will let you display questions and answer choices and share real-time results while scanning student responses.

Applications for Education
Earlier this summer I outlined three ideas for using Plickers in classrooms. Those ideas are listed below.

1. Quickly taking the pulse of the class. Ask your students, "do you get this?" (or a similar question) and have them hold up their cards to indicate yes or no. You can do this with a saved class or a demo class in the app.

2. Hosting a review game. Create a series of questions in your saved Plickers class. To conduct the review have students hold up their cards to respond to each question. Every student gets to respond at the same time and you get to see how each student responded. This is an advantage over many review games in which only the first student to respond has his or her voice heard.

3. Take attendance. In a saved Plickers class each student has a card assigned to him or her. At the start of class just have them hold up their cards to check-in.

Android 4.4.3 update rolling out to T-Mobile’s HTC One (M8)

A software update is rolling out to HTC One (M8) owners on T-Mobile. The build is 2.22.531.5 and it contains Google’s Android 4.4.3 update. HTC has even bundled in the security fixes found in Android 4.4.4 in addition to everything that the labeled version of Android has (which is really just bug fixes). For HTC’s proprietary software, a slew of applications and futures have been improved.

The update is sized at nearly 600MB and requires the device’s battery life to be at no less than 50%.

Another carrier version of the One (M8) will be receiving the same update sometime next month. Jason Mackenzie, HTC America’s president, confirmed to me today on Twitter that the One (M8)’s update on Verizon hit a speed bump. It was expected to be rolling out by now, but there was a GPS issue that required a fix. The timetable Mackenzie supplied was mid-September. The software update for the Big Red version will also include Extreme Power Saving Mode, which has remained absent since launch.

Samsung Confirms List of Phones and Tablets to Receive Kit Kat, Updates Begin Today

 Source: droid-life
Yesterday, we saw soak test invites go out for Verizon Moto X users – today, the update has been approved by the carrier. That doesn’t necessarily mean that mass rollout is upon us, and we’ll still likely see a soak test over the coming days, but clearly Verizon feels comfortable enough with the build to give it the green light.

The update is Android 4.4.2 as expected, build 164.55.2.

You are looking at an improved phone dialer, enhanced on-device security, improved connectivity when roaming, enhancements to Isis Mobile Wallet, battery life bonuses, and the latest in VZW bloatware (Navigator and Tones).

Be sure to let us know when the update hits your device.

Opera 20 Android Update Brings WebRTC Features, Updated Chromium Core, and More

Source: Droid-life
We’ve all grown accustomed to Google’s Chrome browser here at DL, but that doesn’t mean there aren’t any decent competitors out there. One of the more major options is Opera, a fairly underdog browser with a pretty hardcore following. Today, we have an update to the app that brings it up to version 20 and features WebRTC support, a base Chromium update to version 33, and design improvements.

The main push of the update is WebRTC, which brings the mobile browser one step closer to desktop class implementations. This allows users to start video chats with other people using WebRTC compatible browsers (appear.in is the recommended service for those of you who want to try the feature out). This is actually pretty great news — you can now use your camera and microphone right in your web browser to chat in real time with other users. Good on you, Opera.

There are also a couple enhancements to the overall design, including customizability in the navigation bars, but there’s nothing too major.

Features

A fresh look for the Speed Dial reflects a flat design.
Users of Opera for Android can now choose how to set up the browser navigation bars to suit their mobile phone or tablet.
The Chromium core got a kick up to version 33, and multiple bugs in text-wrap and text selection are squashed.
Improvements to search sees the combined search and address bar upgraded, allowing easier search by maintaining the words you search for in the bar.
Opera 20 is available now on Google Play for free — all you Chrome users should try it out and give us your thoughts.

Android 4.4 KitKat Update For T-Mobile Samsung Galaxy Note 3: Source Code Released, OTA Expected Soon

Source: Ibtimes
The official firmware updates to the latest Android 4.4.2 KitKat have been rolling out to a number of devices over the past few weeks. And now it seems that the T-Mobile (NYSE:TMUS) variant of the Samsung (KRX:005935) Galaxy Note 3, with the model number SM-N900T, could be the next flagship smartphone to receive the new OS.

On Friday, Samsung released the kernel source code of Android 4.2.2 KitKat for the T-Mobile branded Galaxy Note 3, which is a strong indication that the actual firmware update for the device is arriving very soon.

Interested developers can visit opensource.samsung.com and search for N900T to find the source code labeled N900TUVUCNB4. The filename is SM-N900T_NA_KK_Opensource.zip and it weighs in at 863MB.

The release of the source code was first reported by XDA Forum Member toastido, who noticed the addition on Samsung’s Open Source Release Center earlier on Friday.

HTC One Android 4.4.2 Kitkat update suspended due to 'difficulties'

Source: Theinquirer
TAIWANESE PHONE MAKER HTC has suspended the Android 4.4.2 Kitkat update for its flagship HTC One smartphone, citing unforseen difficulties.
HTC started its Android 4.4.2 Kitkat rollout for the HTC One and One Mini smartphones in February, with the update arriving on both unlocked handsets and those locked to O2, Three and Vodafone.
However, the rollout has since stalled, with HTC saying it is experiencing 'difficulties' with the Kitkat update. What's more, HTC has changed its software update webpage to say that the update is back in the 'integration' stage, rather than being released to users.
HTC said in a statement, "We are aware that a limited number of HTC users are experiencing difficulties with the KitKat update. As a result, all FOTA updates have been temporarily suspended.
"HTC is committed to providing customers with the best possible mobile experience and we are working hard to resolve the issue quickly."
The firm has not revealed what difficulties it has encountered, but we have put the question to it. However, these issues often occur when an OEM skins Google's Android mobile operating system in a heavy custom skin, which is the case with the HTC One.
If HTC doesn't hurry up and restart the update, it could see the HTC One's successor, the anticipated HTC One+, make it to market before the HTC One Android 4.4.2 Kitkat rollout is complete.
The HTC One+, which presumably will arrive with Android 4.4.2 Kitkat onboard, is expected to feature a 5in HD 1080p screen, a quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 801 processor, dual cameras and an updated version of HTC's custom user interface that, given this recent software update issue, we hope will be more stripped down than previous versions.

Leaked press release of AT&T New HTC One appears

Source: Androidpit
While the name is still up in the air, I guess we can stick to calling it the New HTC One until HTC comes right out and deems to say otherwise. From the looks of it, the New HTC One will have a more rounded metal design than its predecessor and will have dual cameras on the back of the device.
Nothing really new here, asides from the obvious AT&T branding on the back and in the status bar, which falls in line with what we normally see from AT&T press renders. At least this gives us a more concrete version of the device to hold onto until we hear otherwise. Albeit poor sales and weak marketing, the original HTC One was a beautiful device and boasted some impressive specs. Let's hope that HTC can figure out something different for the New HTC One in order to get the consumer market to pay attention and jump on board.
Keep your eyes and ears peeled for either an official word coming from HTC or more information/leaks appearing as we get closer to March 25th. For more information and leaked photos, check out our previous article round-up on the New HTC One/M8.
